WHITTIER, CA. – Wednesday night's game down to the wire for the Pomona-Pitzer Men's Basketball team as Micah Elan's go-ahead jumper within the final three seconds to defeat Whittier College on the road 77 to 75. Elan finished the game with 10 points and a team-high six assists while Alex Preston led the team with 21 points and six rebounds. Daniel Rosenbaum added 19 points and six rebounds.
Season Impact: The Sagehens remain undefeated in the SCIAC with a 5-0 record and are now 13-1 overall.
Pomona-Pitzer pounced to an early 8-2 lead, attacking the paint aggressively to start the game. The Sagehens began to space the floor after as Jack Boyle hit the team's first three-pointer to extend the lead 13-7. The Poets' offense tried to come back, cutting the lead down to three, but Boyle rose to the occasion as Preston kicked it out to the perimeter for the triple. With 11:05 left in the half, the Sagehens ran with the hot hand as Boyle hit his third three to extend the lead 19-11. The Poets responded with a 12-4 run, with all their points coming from behind the line to take a 27-25 lead. The Sagehens battled back to hold a 33-32 lead, but the Poets bounced back with a 6-0 run to take back the lead. The Poets led 38-34 at halftime.
The two teams battled back and forth to start the second half as the Poets looked to pull away. A 7-2 run helped the Sagehens take a 46-43 lead, and Pomona-Pitzer tried to hold on. With 13:48 left in the game, the Poets took a 52-50 lead thanks to a three by Nick Potthoff. The Sagehens broke out with a 7-0 run, including a dunk by Rosenbaum to lead 60-54. However, Joey Toyama of Whittier scored a jumper and a three and Conner Longmire followed with an and-one three to take back the lead 68-65 with 7:46 left in the game. The two sides continued to battle back-and-forth and with 21 seconds, the Poets tied the game at 75 apiece after an and-one layup by Longmire. With three seconds left in the game, Elan hit the go-ahead to seal the victory for the Sagehens.
