Baseball: Sagehens Fall In Doubleheader To Occidental

CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Baseball team fell in their doubleheader to Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) opponent Occidental 10-4 and 7-6 on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.

Season Impact: With the losses, the Sagehens fall to 14-12 overall and 4-11 in SCIAC play.

The Sagehens were led by sophomore Jake Patterson-Kohout who went 1-3 in the loss with three RBIs and two runs scored.

The Tigers got out to a quick lead as they scored two runs in the top of the first off of back-to-back RBIs to take a 2-0 lead.

The Sagehens responded in their first at-bats and plated three runs with one swing of the bat as Patterson-Kohout blasted a 3-2 pitch over the right center field wall to give the Sagehens a 3-2 lead.

The Tiger came back to reclaim the lead in the top of the sixth after platting four runs off of an RBI triple, single and a two-run homer to put Occidental back on top, 6-3.

Pomona-Pitzer trimmed the lead down by one in the bottom of the seventh after scoring off of an error by the Tigers' defense but Occidental came back with four more in the top of the eighth as they took game one of the doubleheader, 10-4.

The Sagehens were led by Patterson-Kohout who went 2-4 with two RBIs and a run scored.

The Tigers continued their habit of scoring early on against the Sagehens as they jumped out to an early lead in all three games this series. Occidental got on the board with three runs in the top of the second after a home run and a 2-RBI single put the Tigers up 3-0.

Occidental added one more to their lead in the top of the fourth with an RBI single, but the Sagehens came back to cut the lead in half with two runs in the bottom of the fourth off of a single by first-year Lincoln Pantell and another run off of a throwing error to trim the lead to 4-2.

The Tigers got one more in the sixth and seventh innings from an RBI single and a walked in run to extend the lead to 6-4 but Pomona-Pitzer trimmed the lead down to two runs at 6-4 after bringing in two runs in the eighth after RBI singles by senior Andrew Phillips and first-year Jack Damelio.

The Tigers added one more run in the top of the ninth but the Sagehens came roaring back in their last at-bats after Patterson-Kohout blasted his second home run of the day to cut the lead down to one run at 7-6 and forced the Tigers to their bullpen clinging to a one run lead. The Sagehens had the tying run on second base but Occidental was able to hold off the Sagehens in the ninth and hold on for the sweep.
