LOS ANGELES, CA. -- The Pomona-Pitzer Baseball team fell in game one of their three-game series 9-7 to Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) opponent Occidental on Friday afternoon.
Season Impact: With the loss, the Sagehens fall to 14-10 overall and 4-9 in SCIAC play.
The Sagehens were led by junior Nolan McCafferty who went 2-4 in the loss with three RBIs.
The Tigers got out to a quick start as they plated five runs in the bottom of the second. Occidental started out with a two-run double and capped the inning off with a three-run homer to play from in front with a 5-0 lead.
Occidental tacked on four more runs in the bottom of the sixth off of three hits to extend its lead to 9-0 over the Sagehens.
Pomona-Pitzer's offense began to click in the later inning as they began to chip away at the Occidental lead. The Sagehens got two runs in the top of the seventh with RBIs from McCafferty and sophomore Jake Patterson-Kohout to cut the lead own to 9-2.
The Sagehens kept the offense going in the eighth with three more after an RBI single by sophomore Hunter Hennigh and back-to-back RBIs once again from McCafferty and Patterson-Kohout to get the Sagehens back within four at 9-5.
Pomona-Pitzer made it interesting in the ninth as they scored two runs from first-year Jack Damelio and McCafferty to cut the lead down to 9-7 but the Sagehens comeback attempt came up empty as the Tigers got out of it in the ninth to hang on for the win.
