CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Baseball team fell in their Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) doubleheader with Cal Lutheran with a 12-4 loss in game one and a 9-7 loss in game two on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.
Season Impact: with the losses, the Sagehens fall to 13-6 overall and 4-5 in SCIAC play.
Cal Lutheran 12, Pomona-Pitzer 4
The Sagehens were led by first-year Jack Damelio who went 3-4 in the loss with one RBI and one run scored.
Pomona-Pitzer got off to a slow start as the Kingsmen came out and opened the game with a four-run first inning. The Sagehens responded with two runs in the bottom of the second after scoring off of an error and then Damelio singled home a run to cut the lead to 4-2.
Cal Lutheran got one back in the top of the third after a solo shot extended the lead to 5-3, but the Sagehens got one of their own in the bottom of the fifth after junior Nolan McCafferty singled home Damelio to trim the lead back down to two runs at 5-3.
Cal Lutheran widened the gap in the top of the sixth as they added three more runs to its total and then added three more again in the top of the eighth to take a commanding 12-3 lead. Junior Jake Lialios kept his good hitting at the plate going as he launched a solo shot in the ninth but the Sagehens ultimately fell in game one 12-4
Cal Lutheran 9, Pomona-Pitzer 7
The Sagehens were led by Damelio and junior Jeremiah Quezada who each went 2-3 in the loss.
Pomona-Pitzer's offense got out to a hot start as they exploded for six runs out of the gate and chased the Kingsmen starter before he could finish the inning. Sophomore Hunter Hennigh doubled home two runs to get the scoring going followed by an RBI single by first-year Adrian Banales to go up 4-0. Damelio capped off the inning with a double down the left field line to bring home two more as the Sagehens stated with a 6-0 lead after one inning of play.
The Kingsmen slowly chipped away at the lead as they tallied one run in the second and one run in the fifth inning, but came all the way back with four more in the top of the sixth to tie the Sagehens at 6-6 after six innings.
The Sagehens' bats struggled to produce any more runs after the first inning while the Kingsmen continued to add to their total. Cal Lutheran took its first lead of the game in the top of the eighth innings after a homerun and a 2 RBI double put them on top 9-6.
Junior Jack Hanley gave the Sagehens a spark in the ninth as he led the inning off with a pinch hit home run but the Sagehens couldn't muster any more offense late as they fell in all three games to Cal Lutheran this season.
