Baseball: Sagehens Open SCIAC Tournament At La Verne

CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Baseball team has earned a berth into the 2018 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Championship where they will take on La Verne on Friday, May 4th at 3:00 p.m.

The Sagehens earned the No. 4 seed heading into the postseason tournament and will take on No. 1 seeded La Verne.

Pomona-Pitzer ended the regular season with a 22-17 overall record and 12-12 in SCIAC play. The Sagehens' offense is led by the trio of sophomores in Nolan McCafferty, Brian Knapp and Jeremiah Quezada. McCafferty led the Sagehens in doubles with 16 this season while hitting .348 and also led the team in hits with 57. Knapp led the Sagehens in RBI with 38 as well as a team best eight home runs this season. Quezada spent the year in the middle of the Sagehens lineup hitting .337 with 36 RBI and leading the team in slugging percentage with .566.

Tyler Yoshihara led the Sagehens as the ace of the rotation with a 6-2 overall record in 11 appearances and a team-high 72 strikeouts.

La Verne heads into the postseason tournament as the No. 1 seed this season with a 28-12 overall record and 19-5 in conference play this season.

The Leopards are led by Adam Santa Cruz who is hitting .406 this season with 39 hits. Nicholas Michaels is leading the team in RBI with 49 and also leads the team in hits with 60.

Leading the Leopards on the mound is AJ Jimenez who has appeared in 21 games this season and compiled a 7-1 record with a 4.71 ERA.

First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. on Friday at Ben Hines Field.
