CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Baseball team swept Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) rival CMS for the second-straight season with a 10-9 win in game one and an 11-9 win in game two on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.
Season Impact: With the wins, the Sagehens improve to 20-9 overall and 11-4 in SCIAC play.
The Stags jumped out to an early lead in the first as they plated the first runners of the game on an RBI double to take a 2-0 lead. The Sagehens cut the lead down to 2-1 in the bottom of the first off of an RBI double by Quezada and then went on to take their first lead of the afternoon in the third as Bryce Rogan smacked his third home run of the year to give the Sagehens a 3-2 lead.
CMS jumped back on top as they scored runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth inning to take a 7-3 lead, but the Sagehens had a slug fest in the bottom of the sixth as Knapp hit a three-run homer followed by a two-run homer by Quezada later in the inning to put the Sagehens back on top, 8-7.
Pomona-Pitzer added one more to its total in the bottom of the seventh as Hunter Hennigh singled through the left side to bring home two more to push the lead to 10-7.
The Stags eyed a comeback late in the game as they scored one in the eighth and homered in the ninth to cut the lead down to just one run at 10-9, but the Sagehens held on to take game one of the doubleheader looking for a sweep of the season series in game two.
The Sagehens were led by Knapp who went 2-3 in the win with three runs scored.
The Stags struck again in the first inning as an RBI double put CMS on top 1-0. The Sagehens responded in the bottom half of the inning as Cade Hulse brought home Knapp on an RBI single to tie the game at 1-1 heading into the second inning of play.
CMS jumped back on top in the fourth after an RBI single and then added four more runs to their total in the top of the fifth to extend their lead to 6-1.
The Stags then had a collapse on defense in the bottom of the seventh as the Sagehens rallied back to plate 10 runs in the inning off six hits and three errors by the Stags' defense all while CMS used four different pitchers in the inning.
The stage was set for the Sagehens after getting their first run off of an error by the shortstop then Rogan singled to left center to bring in Knapp for the first two runs of the inning. The Stags gifted one more run on a passed ball followed by a Seth Stone RBI single to bring in two more runs to tie the game at 6-6. Hennigh singled home Stone then another error in the inning led to Hennigh coming around to score to put the Sagehens up 8-6. Quezada capped off the monster inning with a bases clearing double to plate three more runs as the Sagehens flipped the script on the Stags and went into the eighth with an 11-6 lead.
After giving up the lead, CMS tried to rally back late in the game as they connected for a few big hits in the ninth to cut the lead down to 11-8. The Stags eventually brought the go-ahead run to the plate in the ninth but Peyton Holm came on for the Sagehens to record the final two outs of the inning to secure the Sixth Street sweep over CMS.
