CLAREMONT, Ca. – Jeremy Jess throws seven shutout innings and Bryce Rogan hit a towering three-run homer as the Sagehens impress on opening day with a 6-0 win over non-conference opponent Lewis & Clark on Friday afternoon.
Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens begin 2018 with a win and improve to 1-0 overall.
The Sagehens were led by Rogan who went 2-5 with a home run and a double to go along with three RBI and a run scored. Jeremiah Quezada started off 2018 with a three-hit performance going 3-4 in the game with a run scored.
Jess looked sharp in his first appearance of the year as he went seven innings and scattered 10 hits with three strikeouts and no walks to earn the win.
The Sagehens got things going in a big way to kick off 2018 in their first at-bats as Adam Hinthorne led things off with a walk followed by a single by Brian Knapp and then Bryce Rogan cleared the bases with a three-run bomb to right field to give the Sagehens a 3-0 lead.
Jess helped out his own cause in the bottom of the fourth as he singled home Nolan McCafferty to extend the lead to 4-0. Later in the inning, Hinthorne belted a double down the left field line to bring in Jess as the Sagehens tacked on two in the bottom of the fourth to lead 5-0.
Pomona-Pitzer added one more to their total as they struck again in back-to-back innings with a McCafferty RBI single through the left side of the infield to bring home Quezada to take a 6-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth.
Peyton Holm came on in relief for Jess in the top of the eighth and completely shut down the Pioneers. Holm inherited two of Jess's base runners but Holm came out with three-straight strikeouts to preserve the shutout. Holm came back out for his second inning of relief and went on to strike out five of the six batters he faced as the Sagehen pitching staff impressed in its 6-0 win over Lewis & Clark.
