CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Baseball team defeated Wesleyan (Conn.) 4-3 in the California Classic on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.
Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens improve to 8-11 overall and have now won two-straight in the California Classic while Wesleyan drops its first game of the year and falls to 5-1 overall.
The Cardinals were led by Nick Miceli who went 2-4 with two runs scored and one RBI in the loss.
Senior David Gerics got the start for the Sagehens as he earned the win as he went eight innings gave up three runs on five hits and tallied six strikeouts. Senior Casey Hershfield came in during the ninth and recorded his first save of the season.
Wesleyan came out and took the lead early as they struck in the top of the first with back to back RBI singles by Jeye and Ferrara to take a 2-0 lead.
The Sagehens answered with one run in the bottom of the second as Nishioka hit a deep sacrifice fly to right field to bring home Yoshihara to cut the deficit in half and only trailed 2-1.
Gerics settled in on the mound and didn't allow a run until the top of the fifth when Miceli got ahold of one and homered to center field to extend the Cardinals lead to 3-1.
Pomona-Pitzer came back to tie the game in the bottom of the sixth as Rogan drove in freshman Jake Osgard on a RBI single to right field and after loading the bases, junior Cade Hulse walked to bring in the tying run as the Sagehens and Cardinals went tied at 3-3 heading into the seventh.
The Sagehens came back to take their first lead of the afternoon after Nishioka lined a singled to left field to bring in junior Duncan Skerrett to give the Sagehens a one-run lead at 4-3.
The RBI single by Nishioka gave the Sagehens the edge they needed over the Cardinals as they held on and earned the close win at home.
