CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Baseball Team defeated Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) opponent Whittier 12-2 and 4-1 in a SCIAC double header on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.
Season Impact: with the wins, the Sagehens improve to 6-10 overall and 2-4 in conference play while the Poets drop to 3-11 overall and 1-7 in SCIAC play this season.
The Sagehens were led by junior Bryce Rogan and freshman Nolan McCafferty who both went 4-4 in the win. McCafferty score one run and had a career-high five RBI in the win. Seniors Tanner Nishioka and Kevin Jordan each went 3-4 in the win as well.
The Poets were led by Hank Burditt who went 2-4 with two doubles in the loss.
Freshman Jeremy Jess got the win for the Sagehens as he went a complete seven innings and gave up two runs on six hits while he struck out three Poets.
The Sagehens got on the board first as they strung together a few consecutive hits as freshman Tyler Yoshihara lined a single to right field to bring home freshman McCafferty to take a 1-0 lead over the Poets in the bottom of the second.
After a catcher's interference loaded the bases in the bottom of the third, McCafferty lined a double down the right field line that brought home Nishioka and Rogan as the Sagehens extended their lead to 3-0.
The Sagehens extended their lead with a big bottom of the fifth as they plated four runners in the inning after a RBI single by Cade Hulse, a bases loaded walk and back to back sacrifice flies by Jess and Yoshihara pushed the lead to 7-0.
The Sagehens added two more in the sixth after RBI singles by Rogan and McCafferty and run-ruled the Poets in the bottom of the seventh after McCafferty doubled in the walk-off run to finish off a dominating game one win for the Sagehens.
The Sagehens were led by Jess who went 3-4 in the win. Yoshihara and Rogan each went 2-4 with a run scored and Hulse went 2-5 with a RBI.
The Poets were led by Andrew Lamar and Matthew Macey who each had two hits in the loss.
Nicholas Radich got his second win of the season as he went seven innings and only gave up one run on six hits with two strikeouts. Yoshihara came on in the ninth to record his second save of the year.
Pomona-Pitzer got on the board first in the bottom of the second after a throwing error on a pickoff attempt allowed Yoshihara to score to take a 1-0 lead.
Whittier responded in their next at-bats as Lamar singled home Marcoe to tie the game at 1-1.
The Sagehens came back to take the lead in the bottom of the fifth as Rogan connected on a solo shot to center field as Pomona-Pitzer reclaimed the lead at 2-1.
Rogan came back in the bottom of the sixth and helped the Sagehens again as he singled up the middle with two outs to bring home freshman Jake Osgard to push the Sagehens' lead to 3-1.
The Sagehens added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth as Hulse singled in Peter LaBarbera, who came in to pinch run in the inning, and the Sagehens held off the Poets in the bottom of the ninth to clinch their first SCIAC series win of the season.
