CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Pomona-Pitzer baseball team fell in both games of their home opener to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps by the scores of 21-13 and 11-7 on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.
The Sagehens had a rough time on the defensive side as they surrendered 32 runs on the day against the Stags.
The Sagehens got in trouble in the very first inning as they gave up their first run of the game on a hit batter with the bases loaded and then gave up a grand slam to Trey Smith as the Stags took a 5-0 lead after the first.
The Sagehens got three back in the bottom of the second as Kevin Brice was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and then Simon Rosenbaum singled to bring home two more Sagehens to cut the Stags' lead down to 5-3.
CMS answered with two more in the third as the Sagehens surrendered two runs by way of errors to give the Stags a 7-3 lead.
Pomona-Pitzer came back to tie the game at 7-7 in the fifth as Rob Simsiman, Bryce Rogan and Matt Omori drove home runners to get the Sagehens back into the game. The Sagehens then took their first lead of the game in the sixth as Tanner Nishioka doubled home Rosenbaum and Brice to give them a 9-7 advantage.
CMS had a big seventh and eighth inning as they put up six runs in the seventh and five runs in the eighth to take control late in the game. Pomona-Pitzer tried to answer the Stags' big innings but could not come up with enough offense as they fell in game one of the double header.
Game two started much like game one did as the Sagehens walked home a run with the bases loaded and Smith came up and yet again hit a grand slam in the first inning of the ballgame as the Stags took a 5-0 lead in their first at bats.
The Stags tacked on two more in the second, three in the third and two in the fourth as CMS jumped out to an 11-0 lead after four innings of play.
The Sagehens got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth inning as Adam Hinthorne singled home Rogan, Rosebaum walked home a run and Jordan singled home two more as the Sagehens cut the lead down to 11-4.
Pomona-Pitzer made up more ground in the bottom of the eighth with RBI's from Rosenbaum, Jordan and Rogan but it was not enough as the Sagehens get swept at home and lose the season series to CMS.
Pomona-Pitzer next takes the field on Wednesday, February 24th as they host Bates at 2:30 p.m.
