Miles, Lopez Lead Sagehens Past Ithaca

Claremont, Calif. - Sophomore Lane Miles threw seven strong innings and senior third baseman E.J. Lopez hit a two-run homer as the Pomona-Pitzer Baseball team won a 5-2 decision over Ithaca on Sunday afternoon at Alumni Field.

The win was the sixth in a row for the Sagehens, who improve to 12-3 overall on the season. Ithaca, which has been unable to play in the Northeast as of yet due to weather, opens its season at 0-1.

Lopez got the Sagehens going in the second inning, when he hit a home run over the fence in left field after senior second baseman Mark Okuma led off with a single. Pomona-Pitzer would tack on two more runs later in the inning as sophomore center fielder Tanner Nishioka hit a sacrifice fly deep into the outfield with the bases loaded, and sophomore catcher Kevin Jordan came home on a wild pitch.

Okuma added a one-out double in the third and came home on the back end of a successful double steal to make the score 5-0. Ithaca would get two runs back in the seventh off of Miles, one of which was earned, but that would be as close as they could come. Freshman Peyton Holm came on in the eighth and worked around an error to get two outs, and sophomore David Gerics came on in relief with a runner on third and got a four-pitch strikeout.

Ithaca had the tying run on in the top of the ninth with two outs after an error kept the inning alive for one extra batter, but Gerics got a grounder to third, and Lopez was able to fire across the diamond for the final out.

Okuma was 2-for-3 with two runs scored for the Sagehens, while Lopez, junior left fielder Kevin Brice and senior second baseman Kenny Rabin (pictured turning a double play) were all 2-for-4. Miles allowed four hits and struck out five in seven innings to get the win to improve to 3-1, while Gerics picked up his fourth save.

The two teams will play again tomorrow for a single game at 3 p.m. at Alumni Field.
