Top-Ranked Linfield Takes Two From Sagehens

McMinnville, Ore. - Top-ranked and defending national champion Linfield pulled away late in the second game to take a doubleheader sweep of the Sagehens, winning 16-4 and 13-3 on Saturday afternoon.

With the wins, Linfield improves to 25-3 on the year, while Pomona-Pitzer falls to 12-19. The two teams met last year in the NCAA West Regionals, when the Wildcats ended the Sagehens season on their way to a national title.

Pomona-Pitzer led 2-0 early in the nightcap on a two-run double in the third inning from Simon Rosenbaum. A sixth-inning RBI single from Travis Bowers put the Sagehens ahead 3-2 in the top of the sixth, but Linfield answered with five in the bottom half, capped off by a three-run double from Jake Wylie, who had nine RBI on the day.

Wylie added a second three-run double in the seventh inning to cap off another five-run inning as Linfield ended any Sagehen comeback hopes.

Sam Fox (pictured) was 3-for-5 in the nightcap for the Sagehens, while Tanner Nishioka was 2-for-5.

In the opening game, Nick Fisher had a two-run homer in the first to stake the Wildcats to a 2-0 lead and Wylie added a two-run shot in the sixth. Pomona-Pitzer was held to just three hits on the day, as starter Chris Haddeland allowed one hit over six innings before giving way to his bullpen with a 16-0 lead. The Sagehens scored three in the eighth in three bases loaded walks to close to within 16-4.

The teams will complete a three-game series tomorrow with a single game at 12 noon.
