Sagehens Jump Up Big Early, Capture 13-8 Win Over Caltech

Pasadena, Calif. - Freshman Kevin Brice (Tucson, Ariz.) was 2-for-3 with four RBI, including a two-run double in a six-run first inning, as the Pomona-Pitzer Baseball team earned its 20th win of the season, defeating Caltech 13-8 on Friday.

With the win the Sagehens, who are ranked No. 15 nationally by the American Baseball Coaches Association, improve to 20-7 overall and 13-6 in the SCIAC, good for second place. Caltech falls to 1-20 overall and 0-16 league play.

The Sagehens led 9-0 in the top of the fourth, but couldn't enforce the run rule as the Beavers scored three times in the bottom of the fourth, and then added two more runs in the seventh to close within 10-5. Brice added an RBI triple in the eighth, and freshman Isaac Levy-Rubinett (Austin, Texas) had an RBI single in the ninth for the Sagehens.

Senior Collin Majev (Baltimore, Md.) threw two innings of perfect relief to get the win for the Sagehens, who had 13 hits on the day, including five players with two apiece. Brice's 2-for-3, four-RBI effort led the way, while Mike Moyer (Oakland, Calif.) was 2-for-5 with three runs, Nick Gentili (Glendale, Calif.) was 2-for-5 with an RBI, E.J. Lopez (Fresno, Calif.) was 2-for-6 with an RBI, and Ryan Madden (Oakland, Calif. - pictured) was 2-for-5 with an RBI.

Caltech's offense was sparked by a two-run triple from Mason Freedman in the fourth. Brian Penserini added a two-run homer with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to make the final score 13-8.

The two teams complete their three-game series with a doubleheader at Pomona-Pitzer tomorrow at 11 a.m.
