Thousand Oaks, Calif. - The Pomona-Pitzer Baseball team led 3-0 early in the first game and 2-0 early in the second, but could not hold on as it was swept by Cal Lutheran 6-5 and 3-2 on Saturday.
The losses drop Pomona-Pitzer to 7-3-1 overall on the year and 6-3 in the SCIAC, while Cal Lutheran, which was led by a combined 5-for-7, four-RBI day from Nick DeLorenzo, jumps to 8-4 overall and 4-2 in the SCIAC.
In the opening game, the Sagehens led 5-4 going into the top of the ninth, but a leadoff walk to Nicho DellaValle set the table for a two-out rally. With the bases loaded after an infield single and a hit-by-pitch with two outs, DellaValle came home on a wild pitch from Pomona-Pitzer closer Collin Majev. Trevor Koons then had an infield single to third base to drive home the winning run.
Pomona-Pitzer got off to a 3-0 lead in the first on a three-run homer from senior third baseman James Campbell (Lookout Mountain, Tenn. - pictured), scoring Travis Bowers (Palo Alto, Calif.) and Erik Munzer (Beverly Hills, Calif.), who both singled. Cal Lutheran answered with a run in the second and three in the third to take a 4-3 lead, as Koons had an RBI triple and DeLorenzo had an RBI double in the third.
The Sagehens tied the game back up in the fifth as Munzer led off with a double and came home when senior designated hitter Ben Cohen (Camarillo, Calif.) lined to center field for a sacrifice fly. An error in the top of the eighth gave Pomona-Pitzer a 5-4 lead, but the Kingsmen were able to come back for two runs in their final out in the bottom of the ninth to get the win.
Munzer, sophomore left fielder Mike Moyer (Oakland, Calif.) and Campbell were all 3-for-5 in a losing effort in the opening game, while DeLorenzo was 2-for-4 to start out what would be a big afternoon for him.
In the nightcap, Pomona-Pitzer jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second on an RBI single from freshman shortstop Sam Fox (New York, N.Y.) and a sacrifice fly from Moyer. DeLorenzo, though, tied it up with a two-run single in the third, and then hit the go-ahead solo homer in the sixth.
The Sagehens had their seventh and eighth innings both end on double plays, and then in the ninth, they had two on with two out, as Fox singled and freshman second baseman E.J. Lopez (Fresno, Calif.) walked. However, Tyler Hebda, who threw 4.1 innings of three-hit relief for the Kingsmen, caught Munzer looking on an 0-2 pitch to end the game and give Cal Lutheran a pair of one-run wins.
Fox was 3-for-4 at the plate in the nightcap for Pomona-Pitzer, while DeLorenzo was 3-for-3 with all three of his team's RBI (as well as three of its five hits). Junior Guy Stevens (Lafayette, Calif.) allowed five hits in six innings to get the loss, as Pomona-Pitzer out-hit Cal Lutheran 21-11 in the two games (13-6 in the opener, 8-5 in the nightcap) but lost both.
The Sagehens will be back in action for a three-game conference series next weekend, facing Occidental in one game on the road on Friday and then in a home doubleheader at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
